Actionbound alternative

The Actionbound alternative for team events

Actionbound is a solid platform for educational trails and museum walks. But if you're organising a private team outing or company event, HuntHopper is built with a different audience in mind: groups that want to play together, compete on a live leaderboard, and keep their game within the team.

HuntHopper

That's us

A scavenger hunt app built for team events, parties and company outings. You set up your hunt in minutes, launch it live, and watch teams compete on a real-time leaderboard. Games are private by default: only people with your link or join code can participate.

  • Private by default — not visible on a public map
  • Modern, event-ready look and feel
  • Dutch and English
  • Free up to 3 players or teams
  • AI-assisted content tools

Honestly: we are newer and smaller than Actionbound, with less of a foothold in the education sector. Our strengths are event-oriented design and ease of entry.

Actionbound

A German platform with roots in education and cultural heritage. Schools and museums use it to build guided trails with quizzes, GPS points and multimedia. There is a Dutch-language site. Private use is free; commercial and event use requires a paid tier.

  • Published games are discoverable on a public map by default
  • App download required to play
  • Dutch website, interface partial
  • Strong for educational trails
  • Limited live-competition features

Fair note: Actionbound is a mature, well-used platform. If you are building educational content for schools or museums, it is a genuine option worth evaluating.

Where they really differ

Surface-level the two look similar, but the practical experience is quite different.

Private by default

In Actionbound, published "bounds" appear on a public map and can be found and played by anyone with the app. That is a useful feature for sharing educational routes, but it is not what you want for a private company outing or family celebration. HuntHopper hunts are only accessible to people with your specific link or join code — nothing is publicly visible.

Educational vs. festive

Actionbound was built for guided learning — museum trails, heritage walks, classroom activities. The look and feel reflects that. HuntHopper is designed for competitive, social group play: a live leaderboard, team energy, and a layout that fits a team outing or celebration rather than a lesson plan.

Not free for events either

Actionbound is free for private and personal use, but commercial use — including company outings and paid events — requires a paid tier. So for most business scenarios, both platforms involve a cost. HuntHopper's pricing is transparent and starts from €29 for a single session.

Built-in AI tools

HuntHopper includes an AI challenge generator that helps you build out your hunt quickly, and AI-assisted judging for photo and video submissions. Neither feature is available in Actionbound. If you want to set up a game quickly without spending hours writing challenges, that matters.

Honest: who each is really for

Choose HuntHopper when…

  • You want your game to stay private — not discoverable by strangers
  • You are organising a team outing, birthday, company event or city game
  • A live leaderboard and competitive energy matter to the experience
  • Your group is Dutch-speaking or a mix of Dutch and English
  • You want to set up a game in an hour, not a day

Choose Actionbound when…

  • You are building an educational trail for a school group or museum
  • Sharing your route publicly in the Actionbound community is a feature, not a concern
  • You need AR overlays or location-specific multimedia elements
  • You qualify for the education or non-profit pricing tier
  • Your participants are comfortable installing an app in advance

Try it for your next outing

Create a hunt, add your challenges and invite up to 3 players or teams. Free, no credit card, and your game stays completely private.

Frequently asked questions

Is HuntHopper a good alternative to Actionbound? +
Yes, for most team outings, parties and corporate events. HuntHopper games are private by default and not discoverable on a public map. The live leaderboard and event-oriented design also suit competitive group play better than Actionbound's educational focus. If you need educational trails or museum walks, Actionbound may still be the right tool.
What is the main difference between HuntHopper and Actionbound? +
The clearest differences are privacy and target audience. Actionbound publishes games on a public map by default; HuntHopper keeps them private. Actionbound is built for educational and cultural contexts (schools, museums, heritage trails); HuntHopper is built for social group play at events, team outings and parties.
Is Actionbound free for company events? +
No. Actionbound's free tier is limited to private and personal use. Commercial use — including company outings, team buildings and paid events — requires a paid tier. HuntHopper is free to start with a permanent free plan for up to 3 players or teams, and paid plans start from €29 for a single session.
Do players have to install an app with HuntHopper? +
No. Players open a link or scan a QR code and join straight in the browser on any smartphone or tablet. HuntHopper also has native iOS and Android apps for those who want the richest experience, but they are not required.
