Actionbound alternative

The Actionbound alternative for team events

Actionbound is a solid platform for educational trails and museum walks. But if you're organising a private team outing or company event, HuntHopper is built for a different job: groups that want to play together, compete on a live leaderboard, and keep their game within the team, without committing to a costly annual licence.

Cheaper for a single event Private by default Built-in AI

HuntHopper

That's us

A scavenger hunt app built for team events, parties and company outings. You set up your hunt in minutes, launch it live, and watch teams compete on a real-time leaderboard. Games are private by default: only people with your link or join code can participate.

  • More affordable, especially for larger groups
  • Every game private by default, even the free plan
  • Modern, event-ready interface
  • AI to write challenges and review photo submissions
  • Approve photo & video tasks live from the app
  • Free up to 3 players or teams

Honestly: we are newer and smaller than Actionbound, with less of a foothold in the education sector. Our strengths are price, event-oriented design and ease of entry.

Actionbound

A German platform with roots in education and cultural heritage. Schools and museums use it to build guided trails with quizzes, GPS points and multimedia. There is a Dutch-language site. Private use is free; commercial and event use needs an annual business licence, priced by a yearly pool of players.

  • Business use starts at €350/year and scales with the player pool
  • Published games are discoverable on a public map by default
  • App download required to play
  • Dutch website, interface partial
  • Strong for educational trails

Fair note: Actionbound is a mature, well-used platform. If you are building educational content for schools or museums, it is a genuine option worth evaluating.

Pricing

What it actually costs

The two platforms price very differently. Any business use of Actionbound needs an annual licence, starting at €350 per year, with a yearly pool of players that everyone who plays draws down. HuntHopper lets you pay per event with a one-off ticket, or take a flat monthly plan for unlimited events, so a single outing costs you a fraction of a full-year licence.

Players Actionbound
annual business licence
HuntHopper
one-off event or monthly plan
Up to 50 €350/year €199 one-off event (60 players)
Up to 100 €600/year €299/mo, unlimited events (up to 200 each)
Up to 200 €900/year €299/mo, unlimited events
500 and up €1,500/year, up to €2,250 for 2,500 Talk to us for a tailored plan

The takeaway: to run any business event, Actionbound starts at €350 for a full year. HuntHopper starts free for up to 3 players and €29 for a one-off event, so an occasional team outing is far cheaper. Actionbound's annual licence can work out well if you run frequent, high-volume events. See our full pricing page.

Where they really differ

Surface-level the two look similar, but the practical experience is quite different.

Cheaper for a single event

Any business use of Actionbound requires an annual licence that starts at €350 a year, even if you only run one outing. HuntHopper works the other way around: pay per event with a one-off ticket from €29, or take a flat monthly plan for unlimited events. For the occasional team day, that is a fraction of a full-year commitment. If you run frequent, high-volume events, it is worth comparing both models.

Private by default, always

In Actionbound, published bounds appear on a public map and can be found and played by anyone with the app. That is useful for sharing educational routes, but not what you want for a private company outing or family celebration. Every HuntHopper hunt is private, including free games for up to 3 players. Nothing is publicly visible unless you share the link or code yourself.

Built-in AI, end to end

HuntHopper's AI challenge generator helps you build out a hunt in minutes instead of hours, and AI-assisted judging takes the first pass at photo submissions so you're not buried in reviewing during the game (video tasks you approve yourself). Neither is available in Actionbound. If speed of setup and low effort during the event matter to you, this is a real difference.

Approve submissions on the spot

When teams complete photo or video challenges, submissions land in the app and you approve or reject them live, right from your phone, while the game is running. Points update immediately and the leaderboard stays honest. It keeps you in control of a fast, competitive event rather than sorting through results after everyone has gone home.

Frequently asked questions

Is HuntHopper cheaper than Actionbound? +
For a single or occasional event, yes. Any business use of Actionbound needs an annual licence that starts at €350 per year (50 players) and runs to €900 (200 players). HuntHopper starts free for up to 3 players, with one-off event tickets from €29 and a €299/month plan for unlimited events. So for a one-off outing HuntHopper is far cheaper, while Actionbound's annual licence can suit organisations running frequent, high-volume events.
Is HuntHopper a good alternative to Actionbound? +
Yes, for most team outings, parties and corporate events. HuntHopper games are private by default and not discoverable on a public map, the pricing is lower for typical event sizes, and the live leaderboard and modern interface suit competitive group play better than Actionbound's educational focus. If you need educational trails or museum walks, Actionbound may still be the right tool.
What is the main difference between HuntHopper and Actionbound? +
Price, privacy and target audience. Actionbound charges per participant and publishes games on a public map by default; HuntHopper has flat, lower pricing and keeps every game private. Actionbound is built for educational and cultural contexts (schools, museums, heritage trails); HuntHopper is built for social group play at events, team outings and parties.
Does HuntHopper have AI features? +
Yes. HuntHopper includes an AI challenge generator that helps you write challenges quickly, and AI-assisted judging that takes a first pass at photo submissions. You can approve or reject submissions live from the app while the game is running, including video tasks, which you review yourself. Actionbound does not currently offer these features.
Do players have to install an app with HuntHopper? +
No. Players open a link or scan a QR code and join straight in the browser on any smartphone or tablet. HuntHopper also has native iOS and Android apps for those who want the richest experience, but they are not required.
